Profile

KPMG is one of the world's leading professional advisory services firms with an international presence. Its mission is to be the "global advisory firm whose aim is to turn knowledge into value for the benefit of its clients, its people and the community".

Globally KPMG employs over 100,000 staff in 159 countries, with over 11,000 employees based in the UK. The UK operational structure is organised around four main disciplines: Assurance (previously audit and Accounting); Tax (including Legal Services); Consulting; and Financial Advisory Services. KPMG offers a range of Sustainability Advisory Services dealing with aspects of corporate social responsibility (CSR) such as social accountability, environmental management processes, and supply chain integrity management. The company promotes social and environmental auditing and reporting practices in parallel to its clients. Global turnover in 1999 was US$ 12.2 billion (£7.6 billion), with the UK accounting for £1 billion of fees.

KPMG in the UK has committed to examining and reporting on its commitment to clients, people, communities and the environment. This is a step towards a full programme of social and ethical accounting, reporting and auditing for KPMG.

KPMG's mission statement explicitly commits to creating value for the community as part of its core business engagement. In this respect, the firm is committed to contributing to the communities in which it operates.

We establish and develop voluntary public and private sector partnerships. These seek to provide learning opportunities which benefit people in the community and KPMG. Thus we add both to social capital, and KPMG's knowledge and reputation.

The mission statement of KPMG's Sustainability Advisory Services Group is "to reach a position where our client companies consider social and environmental auditing and reporting practices on a par with financial reporting''.

KPMG recognises the active management of environmental and social performance as an important driver in achieving long term business success. The firm believes that sustainable development across all aspects of corporate performance - economic, environmental and social - will have increasing implications for corporate leadership, management and markets, offering both new challenges as well as a wide range of opportunities.

Several studies have demonstrated that a coherent business strategy that meets wider stakeholder interests can bring benefits, including increased long-term shareholder value. An inclusive, environmentally responsible approach values the needs and expectations of all stakeholders, leading to full integration of environmental, social and economic considerations.

Companies that fail to manage the expectations of their key stakeholders in an accountable and transparent manner risk criticism from their peers, their people, the media and pressure groups amongst others. The information revolution of recent years has made companies more vulnerable; society is better informed than it has ever been. In this respect, KPMG aims to be at the forefront of responsible business practices. Through leadership in this area, KPMG believes it can more credibly help its clients respond to the challenges of sustainable development.

Testimonial
I joined SIGMA because its philosophy and objectives are very close to those of the Q-RES Project, a research programme developed by LIUC University with the participation of 7 leading Italian companies and the support of the Italian Ministry of Industry aimed to develop management guidelines defining the Quality of the social and ethical responsibility (RES) of corporations. I am keen to share knowledge originated by ongoing research within the two projects to strengthen our partnership in the view of the piloting phase within participating organisations.
